New age Farmer Randeep trying to break crop cycle
When most of the farmers in Punjab are stuck in wheat-rice cycle , a new age farmer Randeep singh From Sangrur has different ideas for his future. Randeep is trying to come out of wheat-rice cycle by trying something different. He started floriculture by growing area of one acre but now he has increased the area under cultivation to five times.
This young new age farmer sees floriculture as future but also requested some support from the government. He said there are few markets developed by government for selling and buying flowers but Punjab need more of them, he said.
Randeep is growing Rose flower , is planning to get into more varieties in near future. He said the demand for Rose is coming whole year long, so their is lot scope and profit in its cultivation. Apart from Rose he is also growing Marigold, which is generally known as Gainda flower. He said where as in regular crops farmers need to wait for months to get paid for their crops, but in case of flowers they get paid on the same day or within two or three days.
Rose is not only used for decoration purpose but also for medicines as well. Another advantage of growing flowers is that, the use of water as compared to Rice is , very less. Thus it is helpful in conserving underground water as well. Shivdev Singh told that his parents and even grand parents were growing only Rice, Wheat and Cotton, so when they started with flowers, they initially felt that harvesting on daily basis be problem. But later when they compared out put they found it very attractive.
Another farmer who is also into floriculture told that , they were very impressed by Randeep singh and get themselves out of wheat-rice cycle. He said our state Punjab, is facing huge problem of ground water level which is decreasing with every passing day, and floriculture is one of the best solution for this problem.
